Dear friends and comrades,

Fifty years back, eleven martyrs including protesting peasant women and children were killed by police bullets near Byangaijote in Naxalbari. This incident augmented a movement which in more ways than one, shaped the trajectory of the Left movement in India. On 19th May, People’s Film Collective is organising a cultural meeting to look back and reflect on the Naxalbari movement and its continuing legacy.

In the first part of the programme, we will listen to Anushree-Bipul and Rongili Biswas, who will sing songs composed and sung during the heydays of the Naxalbari movement, as well as those that continue to contain that spirit. We will screen two video interviews/recordings of Suresh Biswas and Shirril Oraon, which have never been screened before.

The second part of the programme will be the second Kolkata screening of the recent film S.D.: Saroj Dutta and His Times, directed by Kasturi and Mitali. The film, 115 minutes long, has spoken languages Bangla and English, with English subtitles.

Please take your seats by 5 pm. It’s a 400-seater hall, and seating will be on first-come-first-seated basis. Our previous show of S.D. ran houseful and we were unfortunately not able to accommodate all of you who had turned up, so please reach early this time.

Zindabad!
